Auto-Tune – Will It Die? Weird Al Yankovic Elaborates!

Auto-Tune, Love it or hate it, we personally hate it, has been used on nearly every track you hear being churned out of the American/International pop music scene, so much so that its almost rarer to hear a non Auto-Tuned track then an original.

Wikipedia our favourite online information source describes Auto-Tune as:

Auto-Tune is a proprietary audio processor created by Antares Audio Technologies. Auto-Tune uses a phase vocoder to correct pitch in vocal and instrumental performances. It is used to disguise off-key inaccuracies and mistakes, and has allowed singers to perform perfectly tuned vocal tracks without the need of singing in tune.

In addition to being used to subtly change pitch, with some settings it can be used as an effect to distort the human voice

Basically meaning it’ll make some lame ass fool such as T-Payne or Paris Hilton, think they can sing and thus create a never ending stream of popstar wanna-bees waiting in line to hurl they’re next ear splitting singles at us like monkeys hurling shit at visitors to a zoo.

Evidently, it’s still not too tired to deserve an online mock-doc, courtesy of Rocketboom’s mad scientists at Know Your Meme, and visiting professor “Weird Al” Yankovic. We loved this video as it gave a pretty good explanation as to how Auto-Tune works, while exploring some of the grey areas regarding these types of cultural/technological developments, and where we should draw the line.

While throwing in some of the funner facts and craziness of Weird Al Jankovic.

What are your views on the use of Auto-Tune, is it cheating or is just another tool that should be used by musicians trying to make it big?
