Mix ‘N Blend Interview & New Debut Album Available for Streaming!
Mix ‘N Blend – Look Mom No Hands & 10 other things you should do!
The trio that is Mix ‘n Blend are no strangers to the nightlife of Cape Town. Some say that they were spawned in the maelstrom of Long Street Festival (rest in peace) and raised somewhere on Lion’s Head, others say that they were conceived within hours of Jesus himself, we cannot deny or confirm these rumours! But what we can say for sure is that these dudes are lekker!
Straight off the release of their debut album “Look Mom, No Hands”, Don’t Party caught up with these muso’s and asked them a few questions!
1. DP: What’s a normal day in the life of the MnB crew?
Kev: Wake up…..Coffeeeeeeee!!!….check mail…..more
coffeeeee!!!…..Liver/Niskerone/Naarch/insert other cape town electronic
muso pops in for visits……more coffee….discussions with publisher Honey B
about various stuff….some tune making….some rehearsing….and some more
coffeeee!
Jon: Wake up…eat some all bran flakes…hear kev moaning coffeeeeeee
around 11 or so! then Coffeeeee!!!!..then program most of the day and find
some time to run for a surf and work on some beats…then probably go out,
play a gig and get drunk…..
Ross: Wake up sometimes? smoke before anything.. eat oats and head of to
the studio and then make beats all day long… or work on corperate
stuff..
2. DP: How do you feel about the progression of South African music in the
last year?
Kev: I def think that the overseas market has woken up to Cape Town
electronic music in the last year, with Cape Town guys getting their tracks
onto various overseas mixtapes and credible ones like Solid Steel etc etc.
I’m not sure about the band scene but hopefully it’s been the same for them
too.
Jon: I think it’s awesome how many people are collaborating in and around
Cape Town and how amped all the people overseas are about the music coming
out of here…bigups to Boom Monk Ben [www.myspace.com/boommonkben] and all the people who are pushing Cape Town music overseas, you really have done more for us down here than
you could ever know.
Ross: I think its rad. Big up to all the homies who are sticking to their
guns and making the music they wanna make because thats what its all about
in the end. Don’t go jumping on genre band wagons. Make the stuff that makes
u happy not the masses. Well thats my opinion anyways. Theres mad talent in
this town every day i get blown away by dudes new beats it makes me happy..
3. How has the new Tech age affected your Playing?
Kev: Well I think it hasn’t affected what we play or how we play our Dj
sets. Bringing Serato into the equation allowed us to get music faster and
play our own produced stuff easily. It hasn’t changed the overall sound at
all though.
With regards to the live act, it has helped us find a way to perform our
own stuff live and on the fly, it also allows us to mash all our tunes
together as we please, something we could never have done before.
Jon: It’s allowed us to start messing around with our tracks in ways that
would not have been possible with previous equipment and opened up the
possibility of wiring synced visuals to our audio…things like that which
are cool.
Ross: I dont think it really matters what u use although the tech we using is kiff.. but if u make a show good with watever u use weather
it be a sampler from the 80s or an akai apc if people dig it they dig it
just make sure its a performance and there is interaction with the
crowd.Well thats what we try and achive..
4. DP : What irritates you the most (whilst playing or otherwise)?
Kev: Hmm, prob be people who decide it’s best to request a song (During a DJ
set) by leaning over all the equipment and bumping needles off etc etc when
they could’ve just walked the 1m around the side and come and asked us.
Also, during a live performance, when someone comes and asks for request of
any kind. IT”S A LIVE PERFORMANCE PEOPLE! J
Jon: Not getting paid our booby rate. As Ross said recently, when Dank is in our
crew it’s minimum 2 boobies an hour.
Ross: @ jon boobies,boobage titties.and cleave
5. DP: Worst performance moment?
Jon: Wacky Wine Weekend. Kevin had a hernia (literally), hard drives
crashed on us, crazy drunk dudes unplugged us, and we almost ran out of
petrol 100 km from anywhere with a cold front rocking in and nothing but a
couple of bottles of wine to keep us company. Thanks Alain for being so
awesome and understanding about our performance that night…
6. DP: Have you ever used your “musician” status to influence who you wake
up next to in the morning?
Kev: Hmmm probably, if you cut us, do we not bleed?
Ross: It doesn’t work im not cool enough yet.
7. DP: If you could pick any person (alive or dead) to be really into your
stuff who would that be?
Kev: hmmm probally Alex Wright
Jon: yeah Alex Wright for sure, if we could just get that bastard to like
us….we’d be slightly cool.
Ross: This dude called DJ clean cut god he cuts it clean no tp needed..
8. DP: Which artist would you most want to remix one of your tracks?
Jon: hmmm probably Alex Wright….and he already has!!
Ross: Clean Cut fo sho if he can focus both his eyes on the same
spot..(inside joke people)
9. DP: Favourite piece of gear that you own?
Jon: ADAM A7 Monitors
Ross: ARP Odyessy,Korg Polysix,
10. DP: Did you cry in “the Lion King”?
Kev: No comment! Thanks for bringing that up again! Snot en trane in the
Mix n Blend Camp now!
Ross: Yes but I was like 6 or some shit I’ve cried since too.
We’ve got the whole album for your listening pleasure
