Pascal and Pearce Interview: Wobble Factor!

Pascal and Pearce have been hitting the South African electronic-wobble house scene hard. Personally I think that the sound they play and produce is, for their respected genres, at the top of its game. What I like about these guys is the progress that they have made in the last year, their set has come full circle in terms of sound and style and it seems that they have really honed in on the tone that makes them a formidable electronic act.
Lately there have been loads of guys who have tried to hit the sound that these guys have been using and producing, but, for me, they all miss the mark; out of the guys I’ve seen. This may be because of their track selection or set structure or it may just be because in my mind P & P sort of “own” the wobble-house scene at the moment, either way, if you were on the Arcade floor on the Friday of Earthdance Cape Town 2009 and heard their set you’d agree with me… they ripped it! I remember standing just outside of the crowd and just watching people’s reactions, listening to the mixes and simply smiling, because the set was completely annihilating, and for me it was this set that stamped their dominance in the wobble-house genre and in so doing cemented their place firmly as a sick electronic act. Don’t get me wrong, there are other dudes out there who push out pure fire when it comes to their gigs, but P & P seem to be winning in this race; especially seeing as their track “Disko Biskit” got to number 4 on the electronic music chart on Beatport.
Because we at Don’t Party like to show you guys insight into the things that we dig, I thought I’d catch up to Pascal and Pearce and ask them a few questions!
So here is how to achieve a
Pascal & Pearce “Disko Biskit” in 10 easy steps
1. Have you ever played overseas? If so,
a. What is it like?
P: Played in Mykonos and Cyprus, Island life J
b. Do they dig your style?
P: They found our style to be fresh, and banging, they were partying, so I rate!
c. Do you prefer playing over there to here?
P: Depends, its always sick to play to people who you know, but those clubs and the crowds, f*%ck me, who wouldn’t love to play there!
2. What has been your worst DJ experience?
P: We’ve been pretty fortunate with that, touch wood, never had anything TOO bad go down. Power cuts always suck, but that’s part of the game I guess, it’s bound to happen some times!
D: I tried to cue the wrong CDJ once at a really big party and everything stopped, that was really nice.
3. Best gig you’ve played?
D: Friday night at Earthdance 09, too sick!
P: The wavehouse in Umhlanga last year on matric rage was also pretty cool, playing after Fresh and Euphonik to like 8 000 people was pretty epic!
4. If you could play to any crowd, in any place of the world, where would it be?
P: Space in Ibiza, Carl Cox REVOLUTION PARTY Tuesday night, on the terrace – boom!
5. Do you ever piss each other off or have you had any bad on-stage tussels?
D: Haha, not really, nothing a tequila can’t sort out! It’s all about the music on-stage, we’ve never really had anything to tussel about!
6. Cubase/ Reason/ Ableton/ Acid/ Logic/ Pro-tools?
D: Cubase all the way! We’ve been using Nuendo recently, but it’s pretty much the same as Cubase. We’ve used quite a few DAW’s, cubase is definitely the one!
7. What’s your top 5 played on your ipod (no lies!)?
D: Haha, I’ve always said you can’t judge a person by what they have on their iPod. I’ve got some real cheesy stuff, I’d have to check the 5 most played but I’m sure you’d find the DOTA track, Everytime we Touch – original mix of course – Mini K’s Ah Yea mix, anything by Kyle Watson and maybe Disko Biskit
P: Wolfgang Gartner x 2 – Wild Card & Fire Power, Mini k- Feels so real , The Bulgarian – Robot Action Hero ( Hott Mouth Remix ) , Pascal & Pearce – White Heart Lane
8. How does it work in the studio with you two? Do you both sit down and write tracks, or do you make them individually then combine them? i.e. take us through the process of making beats?
P: We just sit down and make a track hey, we don’t really try do our own stuff and combine it, it gets too messy. We just mess around with ideas until we find something we both like, then just work on it till the track is done. Sometimes it can take hours, sometimes weeks. But it’s a very irie process!
9. What do you think of Julius Malema?
D: He is a very, very nice man. So nice.
P: So overrated hey, had a beer with him the other day & he was way too intelligent for me.
10 .Evolution or religion?
D: Evolution, I’m all about the facts!
P: PRO EVOLUTION
(FIFA SUCKS)
D: FIFA for life.
