Schlachthofbronx – Munich Ghetto-BASS-in-ya-FACE!
Schlachthofbronx is a 3-piece BASS driven dance act from Munich, Germany. Members Subbass Commandante Graf von Stierenfroed, Bass King T and DJ King Augenring have been killing it all round Europe recently, and for the Joburg kids who were fortunate to attend the event, they killed it here too! Their sound is kinda like a Spank Rock meets Major Lazer collaboration with a whole lot of airhorn! Their flowing basslines, rythmic drums, and blazing trumpet melodies will have you air-pumping your fists without even knowing it…
In August, 2009, these guys released their debut album ‘dto’ on the highly acclaimed Munich based label: Disko B, and so far it has done smashingly. With people like Diplo and Sinden loving it, who can go wrong!
Don’t Party caught up with the trio hot off the heels of their SA gig, and this is what they had to say for themselves:
1. Your guys name Schlachthofbronx, is quite unique, its one hell of a name to type
, where did it originate and what does it mean??
Its the nickname of the quarter we live in. people have nicknames like that for other parts of the city as well, like fürstenfeldbrooklyn, schwarlem, south sendling etc….
we all live in the meatpackingdistrict o munich (german: schlachthof).
2. So what would you best say describes your sound?
Carnivaltechno said one guy in the cd store in johannesburg… bavarianbounce, socarave, gabbapolka or alpinbass are other categories we know.
3. How did you guys end up working together?
We know each other from a graffiti crew. Then met again later deciding to get something started since we werent really satisfied with the sound in the city’s clubs these days.
4. What kind of gear do you guys use for your live shows? I noticed a lot of airhorn going down and it made for quite a crazy live effect!!
We go with three cdjs, an old mpc, a customized dubsiren, some korg -toys, of course our handmade airhorns/foghorns and some plastic things we call travelvuvuzelas.
5. You’ve recently done a lot of collaborating with South Africa’s own Spoek Mathambo…
a. How did this come about?
We met Spoek in Munich when he was playing as sweat.x in 2008. since then we were in contact and worked on tracks together…last month we played some gigs with him in Europe and Africa, was really cool.
b. What stuff are you guys doing together at the moment, any releases or things we should look out for now or in the future?
Spoek did a track with us for our forthcoming ep on Daniel Haaksmans man recordings called ayoba (which also features gnucci banana btw!) which drops January 4th.
And we’re already working on more stuff together…
6. I’ve been hearing quite a lot of stuff about you guys through my love of the blog search, it seems like 2009 has been quite a successful year for you guys? Where to next? What’re you guys up to in the not too distant future?
Yeah, we loved 2009! had a lot of great shows and some good feedback on our tracks, what more can you wish for….?!
next year will see some more releases as well as lots of clubshows (and some festivals too..:)
7. How would you rate your experience in South Africa?
a. Did you have a good time playing here?
It was huge! We never exspected the people to like the stuff we do that much. They already knew some of it…
b. Would you ever want to come back?
Of course we want to come back. Hopefully sometimes in 2010.
8. If you could get any muso out there, no matter which genre, to do a remix of a track of yours, who would you want to do it?
Busy signal, lady stush, just to name a few
9. Who in your mind is “on-it” in terms of the European electronic dance music scene right now?
Lots is going on right now…!
Whole man rec posse, topbillin, all the italians like solo or riva star etc.. we re totally into some funky artists like stush, gappy ranks has big tunes, of course sinden, bootycall crew from paris, too many to mention, really.
10. Pepsi or Coke?
Basically everything that goes with rum is cool with us. our favorite right now is vodka- gingerbeer! (with a slice of lime…)
