43 mins with Anthony Dart [Ontwerp.tv]
So recently I met Anthony Dart, the mastermind behind Ontwerp, one of Yoburg’s most pioneering design and motion graphics firms, for some digital chit chat. We exchanged bytes over 6 time zones and several thousand kilometers, not your standard lunch meeting, how very 21st century. This stride towards tomorrow reflects Ontwerp’s unorthodox futuristic aesthetic that they have become renowned for both in ZA and internationally.

Dart’s creative voyage began in fine arts and photography, he then joined the digital boom, creating iconic typography and graphics, all with a distinctive minimalist edge. From there it was a natural progression straight upwards, which included works in motion graphics, animation, interface design, visual effects and every combination thereof.
The man has an utter disregard for current trends, one would think that he was the one who was ahead of his time zone. The inspiring thing is that he is totally humble about his gift, claiming that he lives in a bubble, but I’m not convinced. Especially since when I asked him what music he draws his inspiration from, he answered with the most obscure experimental shit I had never heard of, and I do take pride in my knowledge of obscure experimental shit.
Some of his most esteemed pieces include post production on the music video for Lark’s Moonlight (previously featured on Dont Party), many sci-fi-esque ads on TV in SA which you will be familiar with, as well as many projects on mystery sub brands of Ontwerp.
Dart claims the next step in his evolutionary chain is ‘graphical composing…its like my design but just with music’. He recently bought himself a Moog Voyager analogue synth, and along with various audio software is getting into audio production, which he says will inevitably collide with his visual projectiles. That should be quite a show.
Ontwerp and the rest of the legacy created by Anthony Dart are without a doubt seminal to the future of South African design. His works could be considered future classic, and we certainly look forward to seeing the upward advancements transpire.
