Elite Force Re:Vamped [updated with the first slammer from the album]
Nu School breaks veteran, Simon Shackleton, better known for his Elite Force and Zodiac Cartel monikers, has been hard at work forging a new sound which he likes to call Tech Funk. And now he has an album which may very well redefine the way electronic music is written and performed.
The UK has always dominated the world of broken beats (Drum & Bass, Breaks, Garage, Dubstep), and perhaps the sounds being melded by the empire’s finest is a reactionary movement against the dying of the breakbeat genre.
Elite Force’s latest offering is a genre defier of epic proportions. Re:Vamped takes the concept of mixing, remixing, sampling, and writing music to new heights, by creating 15 pieces of music, composed from bits and pieces of existing tracks, all mashed together in a style that makes you feel that maybe breaks are not the only thing soon to become obsolete.
“I decided to embark on a whole new extension of the re-edit idea looking at creating a number of brand new tracks out of components taken from older tunes… proper mash-ups. Some were born out of simple live jams that evolved into finely tuned studio creations, whilst others were ground-up rebuilds where I was effectively writing new pieces of music using samples from other tracks. There was no fixed way of working and no sacred cows that went un-plundered.” [Elite Force 2009]
“This is one of the single most important, captivating and crucial mixes / album of the new decade (It’s a big and very long call, I know, we’ve got 9 years until the 20’s) not just for breaks, but for the dance music scene as a whole, it’s a signal of what is capable when you throw in innovation, experience and pure class. I have high hopes that Re:Vamped will re-invigorate a genre that many have missed.” [InTheMix Magazine]
Work on Re:Vamped began during his constant worldwide touring schedule, where Elite Force would take tracks that he loved but somehow couldn’t slot into his sets, organize them into the same key and then extract the best pieces. Then adding these parts together to form new and interesting pieces of music.
“All of a sudden, you just find that out of a two hour set, you have an hour that nobody else has. It’s really exciting and turbo-charged. I was really excited to go out and perform again.”
