Love Parade :: From Triumph To Tragedy

The annual Love Parade music festival in Berlin, Germany has come to a tragic end this year after 19 people were trampled to death inside the only entrance/ exit tunnel to the event on Saturday (24 July 2010).

What triggered the wide-spread panic and, there-after, the stampede is still unknown.

“There was no escape,” one Love Parade participant called Marius told the Bild.de website. “People were pressed into the wall. I was afraid I’d die.” News24.com

This years love parade music festival was attended by over 1.4 million people.

The founder of the Love Parade, Matthias Roeingh, known by the name Dr Motte, blasted the planning for the event, saying “one single entrance through a tunnel lends itself to disaster. I am very sad.” (NDtv)

The festival itself was not cancelled, so as to maintain a calm among the event goers, but slowly people were asked to leave.
