Mid.Week.Mix v 23.0 :: The Barcode Filthcast :: DONNY
From today the MID WEEK MIX is back in full effect and to launch this momentous occasion we have something rather special for you! Today we have something that might cause you to rupture a vertebrae, split your colon or crack a rib. Today is the day when the feeble race known as humanity are introduced to the superior beings that follow the FILTH. Are you ready for this mid.week.mix? Are you sure?
THE BARCODE FILTHCAST AND THE 5 WHY’s!
- Why the Filthcast?
Donny: because its full of filth. horribly filthy.
Cyall Barcode: lol! well the name comes from a combination of the word ‘filth’ and ‘podcast’. Around the time I came up with the name, podcasts where relatively new and quite popular on iTunes, so it seemed a good way to go since it is available on iTunes.
Donny: how long ago did we start the Filthcast?
Cyall Barcode: the idea came about in december 2007 while I was still working at Renegade Hardware. At the time there was no reliable podcast for hard drum & bass, aside from the Lifted podcast (which was never really that hard, and is now hugely unreliable). I don’t think we had any other direction other than that we knew we wanted to do a podcast. I bought a Rode microphone, we got drunk on a bottle of Klipdrift and Filthcast 001 was conceived.
- Why Donny?
Cyall Barcode: because he’s sexy, smart, genuine, loving and caring.
Donny: and cheap
Cyall Barcode: and works for EA Games as a sound designer on Harry Potter. now you know who made those wand samples.
- Why Drum & Bass?
Donny: because dnb is the best. filthy dnb is the best
Cyall Barcode: At the time I worked for Renegade Hardware, a london drum & bass label who have been releasing music since 1995. Renegade Hardware started Barcode Recordings in 2003 as a sister label and platform for emerging artists such as Spor, Counterstrike, Chase & Status and Evol Intent who’s sound was a bit tougher than the hardware sound. in 2007 I took over barcode from hardware and donny joined in. Barcode has always been harder and more experimental than the hardware sound, so it was a natural progression being good friends with Counterstrike & Donny that the label continued in that direction.
- Why does Barcode push the harder sound?
Cyall Barcode: well we kinda just answered that one
Donny: we like hard stuff. bricks and cocks. lol sorry I’ll try be sensible
Cyall Barcode: one of my favourite comedians Steve Hughes said – “if you take acid everyday you will ruin your mind. if you have anal sex everyday, you’ll ruin your arse. either way you’ll embarrass yourself on the bus”.
Donny: lol i like it
- Why does the Filthcast get such a strong response?
Donny: ……… I think i’m actually incapable of answering any questions seriously tonight lol
Cyall Barcode: much like you where on Filthcast 001 and 002
Donny: yup! we basically did Filthcast 001 and 002 very pissed with a lot of useless chatter and conversation over the top of the mix.
Cyall Barcode: some people loved it some people hated it
Donny: most people hated it
Cyall Barcode: someone posted the link up on a scottish drum & bass forum and another replied, “those guys are worse than local radio”
Donny: lol i remember that
Cyall Barcode: but in all honesty, it has taken a while to figure out what direction i wanted to go in with the Filthcast and what goals i wanted to see it achieve. since Filthcast 005 we’ve gotten rid of the voice overs and wank chatter. seems to have helped, the downloads have gone from 2000 to 20000 a month. it has definitely grown into a series which is becoming a bench mark for hard drum & bass and i think this is the reason the Filthcast fans value it so much because it does showcase something different to mainstream drum and bass. not the crap that makes it into the beatport top 10.
Donny: and the dnb arena awards. My aim is to never be nominated for a dnb arena award… if you are, then you have lost.
Cyall Barcode: then we must be winning!
Donny: yup! Filthcast ftw
