Guten Tag :: Talking to W.A.V

Happy Thursday Y’all

We made it this far after all, for those of you that had your first week back at work I hope it didn’t kill you! If you’re still alive and looking for a way to celebrate there is something pretty dope going down tomorrow night at the Woodstock Industrial Centre. The exhibition is called Guten Tag and features like a butt ton of artists both locally and internationally.

I’ve been lucky enough to spend the past summer month hanging out with one of the collectives from Hamburg, Germany. Three guys calling themselves We Are Visual (W.A.V). Their work holds a particular interest for me because they won’t pay for anything, they create art only from what they find lying around the city (hence the picture of them in a dumpster!).

Anyway, I asked them to write a little something about their work and what to expect tomorrow…“Through impressions made during our stay, we have reflected on both the physical and the ambiguous boundaries in the city. Undertaking various projects in public space we hope to present and question these boundaries and dichotomies. The aim is not to criticize or force change, but rather to engage those who view the work with the tangible and intangible boundaries. Woodstock, undergoing a process of re-imagining as creative industries expand out of city centre, is a poignant stage for the dichotomous boundaries manifest in various forms. This is where we have informed the process of the exhibition through living and working in the neighbourhood. Similarly, the specific use of the official street signage colours of black, red, and golden yellow at once plays a role in subverting established structures while also playing on the colours of the German national flag. This is a means of self-reflection on our activities in the area and a reference to the German take over for the exhibition.”

If that isn’t enough for you, check out the insane list of contributing artists (Flying Fortress being a personal highlight), and if even that isn’t enough there is a party afterwards with a juicy DJ lineup.

See you tomorrow kids icon smile Guten Tag :: Talking to W.A.V
