White Lies – Ritual [Album Review]

White Lies first album, To Lose My Life’, was released in early 2009 too much critical acclaim not surprising due to the fact it reached #1. However back here down South it only started becoming popular amongst Indie followers last year, which was cool because it meant we had to wait less than a year to see what ‘gem’ they brought out next. Ritual was released on 18/01/2011, but to call it a ‘gem’ would be kind.

Ritual unfortunately does not live up to the hype, The album drags on and the songs seem to take forever to finish as they all clock out at around four and a half minutes. It has a feeling of monotony and doesn’t leave me with much anticipation of what’s to come.

The album isn’t bad per se, but it’s just one of those cases where the band have made such a killer debut album that we as music lovers expect the follow-up to be just as good…Even though it very rarely is. The three best tracks on the album in my opinion are without a doubt “Bigger than us”, “Streetlights” and “Holy Ghost” but they are still nothing compared to the catchy and energetic tracks of To Lose My Life, all in all, Ritual is a disappointing follow-up. All I can hope it that they learn from their mistakes and the next album is everything we had hoped this one would be.
