The Ooms, the Ass-grabbers and the Cherub People :: Good ol’ Folk at Schivas Rock [PTA]

Walk into Schivas Rock on a Friday night in a dress and you’re going to get your ass grabbed. By a boy or a girl. But this is not a deterrent for the new generation of alt-kids who have added to the mix of soiled wrong-side-of-forty rocker locals who call this quintessential dingy Pretoria dive ‘home’.

A gent mans the door, peering in at the crowds through the windows when no-one is looking. Walls painted mustard yellow to resemble sandstone make the place feel like it is closing in on you.IMG 9523 copy The Ooms, the Ass grabbers and the Cherub People :: Good ol’ Folk at Schivas Rock [PTA]

Hipsters in rokkies huddle around the dance floor while a table of Oom Schalk Lourens lookalikes perve from a dark corner highlighted by peachy tones. A pool table and players hog the back end of the dancefloor. We’re all here for a long-forgotten enigma in the South African music industry: soulful, back-to-roots, guitar-fuelled folk rock at Shivas Rock’s ‘Rock & Roll is Hard On Living’ night.

Bushy-haired Tim Burns is hammering at his guitar when we edge our way to the dancefloor. He fills calculated silences with the raw syrupy grit of his voice, conjuring up images of moody-blue velvet. Mr. Burns’s Donovan-like tunes, folksy and dead honest and pure, with anxious animation breaking through the confines of artistic internment, are like a rock shandy on a hot sunny day. Bitter-sweet, refreshing, brusque and alive.  It’s been a long time since someone so grounded and authentic has graced a stage in Pretoria.

IMG 9484 The Ooms, the Ass grabbers and the Cherub People :: Good ol’ Folk at Schivas Rock [PTA]All too soon he has left the stage and the oomies break free from their longing for the old days. I set about exploring through the gunky cloud smoke. Locals gather around a pool table in the back and foxy girls with ribbons in their hair and bright-fuchsia lips flit around the centre of the room, making themselves seen.IMG 9553 The Ooms, the Ass grabbers and the Cherub People :: Good ol’ Folk at Schivas Rock [PTA]

IMG 9551 copy The Ooms, the Ass grabbers and the Cherub People :: Good ol’ Folk at Schivas Rock [PTA]“You pretty ladies look like you need a ride home,” says a pimply middle-aged man as he hands over a laminated taxi-service card. Subtly, my friends trickle away from what has now become a montage of the worst and most dissonant pick-up lines I’ve ever heard, leaving me to lose the dud without pissing off his hairy wingmen sniggering in the corner.

And then Naas Veld, a laid-back set decorated with a banjo and guitar, take to the stage, allowing me to make my excuses. Groupies of some sort gather in electric anticipation. Naas Van Jaarsveld of éF-éL fame is the man behind the sound, lanky and blonde and ambitious, fervent and passionate. And here, the banjo half of tonight’s duo adds a touch of cheeky nostalgia to the sweet beatific harmonies that burst from the mellow pair. It’s a hint of inspired Eddie Vedder with a little more purity, a little less gruffness – and a lot more Van Jaarsveld in it. It’s refreshing and fascinating, and the crowd laps it up, rightfully so, calling for encores and chanting along.

Between sets we are sky rocketed back and forth from playful reminiscence to hardcore internal head banging, with the kids magnetically drawn to the dance floor and the ooms shaking their heads in derision. Professor Mystery is discoing behind the decks, whiskey is flowing, and B-movie-style robot monsters escape from the speakers.

IMG 9655 The Ooms, the Ass grabbers and the Cherub People :: Good ol’ Folk at Schivas Rock [PTA]A hippy with hemp ribbons tied around her head loses her dinner in the bathroom basin and fumbles back to the bar where she shoves her tongue down a scrawny guy’s throat. My friend gets her ass grabbed. She’s wearing a dress. I chat to a girl about the pros and cons of dyeing one’s hair pink. She is the poster child for pro.

When Them Frog take to the stage after an epic sound check, the crowd is desperately craving their presence. Sexy people fawn at the stage front, moody kids linger coolly on the fringes.IMG 9689 The Ooms, the Ass grabbers and the Cherub People :: Good ol’ Folk at Schivas Rock [PTA]

Them Frog are a raging volcano of crashing and melodious lyrics. But through the smashing there is a lot of soul. Guitars chug and the bass pops, while heavily percussive reverberation fills the room . Gusty vocals and a primal but sharp sound permeate the crowd and drag them into delirium. But they are too big for this bar and the low ceilings and drunk fogies don’t do them justice.

All too soon the mist has descended around the outskirts of the bar, and the soul that came with the music has been stripped from what is now evidently a plethora of murky sleaze. I’ve become too comfortable in the all-too familiar Pretoria hospitality. It’s time to go. The dim light forms deep shadows on the creases of leather skin and mascara-soaked cherubs. And things start to get a little creepy.

Ah Pretoria – how we love your ways, your soul.

Schivas is, according to me, the the back alley abortion clinic of venues. Young bands/artists go there to die a slow and painful death.
This putrid pot of misery smells of figurative (and often literal) puke.

If shivas has a purpose, it is to educate upcoming bands of how shitty a venue can be…

Mr “Baas De Beer” as you so eloquently call yourself: I take serious offence to your opinion(yes I understand that it is only your opinion, however biased it may sound to me).

How many times have you actually been to Schivas Rock?

Just because you failed to pull a crowd when you booked a gig there, does not give you the right to slander the name of a venue that has been supporting the South African Music scene for 11 years. Tell me how many other venue’s in Pretoria(or I would go as far to say South Africa) can say they’ve been around for that long?

And as to your comment: “If shivas has a purpose, it is to educate upcoming bands of how shitty a venue can be…”, (firstly if you would be so kind as to at least spell the venue name correctly), Schivas Rock has been supporting the “upcoming bands” of Pretoria and Joburg(from all over the country and occasionally international acts actually) by allowing them to display their music to the public and draw a following. We supply a venue(at no charge to the bands), we supply sound, which includes an engineer(at what is most likely one of the most competitive rates around), we advertise for the bands(at our own cost)and if that isn’t enough we also allow them to dictate the price of cover charge etc…

Now can you honestly tell me that sounds like “the back alley abortion clinic of venues. Young bands/artists go there to die a slow and painful death.”?

Schivas may not be easiest on the eye(Do you really want to go rock out at a place that looks like News Cafe or Rhapsodys?), Schivas may not always smell like roses(If you drink enought Tequila you don’t notice it, believe me!), Schivas may not always please everyone as it has as a clientelle a very diverse(as is our country) population. But one thing we do right is look after our family.(I know I implied it, but for your sake I will explain… By “family” I mean Customers.) Everyone is welcome at Schivas Rock. Even you…

Come visit us again, leave your prejudices at the door and see if you still have the same opinion… I seriously doubt it.

P.s. I know who you are, we are “friends” on Facebook. So if you’d like to reply to me directly, please feel free.

        Well put Graeme,

Aside from going to the usual News Cafe & Rhapsodys, I have been frequenting Schivas for over eight years now and it’s a great venue to go for a drink. As with most places, you will have the occasional ‘bone head’ hanging around, but rather dont go out if you are so easily offended (maybe mommy’s house might be the best thing)

I guess someone just had nothing better to do with his time.

My apologies for only replying now. I only saw your reply today (strange, I know).

As I said, things might have changed since the last time I was there.
But in short, a bit of a response:
-When my band used to play there (did so on a few occasions), we had to pay a ridiculous amount for a sound engineer. Once, he didn’t even pitch, and we had to make own arrangements.
-As for marketing, on two of the occasions that we played there, we sent posters to the venue in advance (seeing as no marketing was done by the venue itself) and these posters simply did not get put up (in spite of repeated assurances made by the venue.
-On several other occasions that I have been there, the sound for the poor bands was horrific.

now, harsh as my opinion might be, i remind you yet again, that I base that on my experiences there a few years ago. So I am completely open to the idea that things might have changed since then.

I have no desire to stir some shit, so sorry if you took my passionately worded opinion too seriously.
I am critical of every venue in all aspects, so please don’t feel picked on.

    O, ass-covering disclaimer:
I haven’t been to schivas in more than a year. I heard things might have changed. But I doubt it.
