I first heard of boom.fm at our Dont Party.tv launch when I met some of the team and I was intrigued almost immediately by the idea but it hadn’t launched and I couldn’t really use the service. That recently changed and boom.fm has gone live and it’s a pretty exciting new platform.

So what is boom.fm

boom.fm is a music website where bands can upload and sell their tracks and fans can discover new music through streaming tracks in the radio rooms making it easy to find new music. They’ve created a community of bands and fans connected by music, podcasts, blogging, behind-the-scenes videos, gig guides, radio rooms and a whole bunch of other cool stuff.

The site is pretty easy to use and you can see by the design they put a lot of time into the user interface and look and feel of the site.

What is different, however, is a feature called “radio rooms” – which allows users to create their own playlists from music on the portal and interact with others in the room. Besides a chat facility – which allows for increased user interaction, up-voting or down-voting a track means that the music played in that room is democratically decided upon by the group involved, creating their own “chart”. In this way, everyone can listen to full tracks available on the portal, display their
mixing abilities to others, and meet new people with similar tastes. This function has a purchasing capability – anything someone listens to can be bought then and there without being diverted elsewhere.

The site has a wide variety of music and it’s pretty great to finally be able to stream local content so easily. I personally feel I site like this has been needed for a while now and I think it could do wonders for the local music scene if people start to purchase music online rather than rip it or download it from other sources.

At the moment boom.fm is still in beta phase and we were told there are quite a few changes and updates still to come.
