It looks like Apple will be announcing their new iOs 5 update and possibly the iPhone 5 on October 4th, 2011. The invitations for the upcoming event have just gone out with the tagline ‘Let’s Talk iPhone’. As the resident Dont Party Apple fan, I’ll be following this religiously and we’ll certainly keep you in the loop!

Ray-Ban recently launched an amazing competition that we just got wind of and it’s got us quite excited! There’s not much time left but we’ve seen designers whip out some amazing work in shorter and we know you’ve got what it takes to get this done! Details after the jump!

The Lowdown!

This Summer, Ray-Ban – the world’s leading eyewear brand – is releasing a limited edition compilation disc including original music from some of South Africa’s most influential bands and artists. Ray-Ban and music have always evolved together – icons in music have a long history of making Ray-Ban eyewear a part of their identity, and in turn Ray-Ban’s have become a musical icon in their own right. Who can forget the way that Bob Dylan wore his classic Wayfarers whilst telling the world that ‘times are a-changing’. Still today, musicians of all genres choose to see the world through Ray-Ban lenses, and share the spotlight with them.
To celebrate the strong association between Ray-Ban and South African musicians, Ray-Ban is reaching out to all local creatives asking them to design the cover for this compilation: the ‘NEVER HIDE Playlist’. The most original submission for the competition will be displayed in over 400 retail outlets nationwide, and end up in the hands of anyone who buys a pair of Ray-Ban’s between the 15th of October 2011 and the end of November 2011. The winner, and his/her friends, will also be entitled to “party-like-a-rockstar” with all the compilations’ featured musicians at the invite-only launch event.

Guidelines

Submissions must include a pair of Ray-Ban’s (think laterally!), and the copy ‘NEVER HIDE Playlist’ must be displayed. The rest is up to the designer. All entries need to be in the form of a 15cm x15cm 300 dpi JPEG or PDF file (file-size must not exceed 3MB) and must be sent to Ray-Ban@Luxottica.co.za. For the duration of the competition, the best submissions will be posted on Facebook and the winner will be announced by Friday 16 September 2011.

Hours after Jobs announced his resignation, Tim Cook, 50, was announced as the new CEO of Apple Inc. Cook isn’t new to the position as he spent a short spell running Apple back in 2004 and 2009 during Steve Jobs’ absence due to medical reasons.

Jobs had this to say:

I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple’s CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come.

I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee.

As far as my successor goes, I strongly recommend that we execute our succession plan and name Tim Cook as CEO of Apple.

I believe Apple’s brightest and most innovative days are ahead of it. And I look forward to watching and contributing to its success in a new role.

I have made some of the best friends of my life at Apple, and I thank you all for the many years of being able to work alongside you.

I’ll still undoubtedly be buying Apple products for some time to come but it’s an interesting time for the company as it sees it’s founder and prodigal son move on. Hopefully Steve stays around for a while and manages to get his health in check. All the best!

Swatch has teamed up with Kidrobot, to create Kidrobot for Swatch, a collection of eight watches, each accompanied by a complimentary Dunny. The range features some amazing artists such as Gary Baseman, Jeremyville, Frank Kozik, Joe Ledbetter, MAD, Tara McPherson, SSUR, and Tilt. The range looks amazing and will be released soon, whether it hits South African shores is another question entirely, let’s hope it does. Check it out below.

South African designer Kronk, who has been featured on the pages of Dont Party numerous times has unveiled an awesome new Dunny design for Kidrobot. This time around it’s a limited edition 20-inch Killjoy Dunny that will be hitting stores on June 30th with a price tag of $400. I’ll certainly be keeping an eye for it!

Like I said earier this week when I posted the Audi A1 concept car, we don’t usually post car related content here on Dont Party but it would seem we’re making an exception twice this week. Mercedes recently commissioned supermodel Jessica Stam to star in this all-new, international campaign. The campaign’s visuals were shot by photographer Terry Richardson who for once remains behind the camera and not in front of it.

The car was unveiled as a concept vehicle for the new 2012 A-Class range and it looks pretty damn impressive. I never thought I’d say I could drive an A-Class but if it looks anything like the concept vehicle, I reckon I could stomach it..

Another watch has made it’s way onto my ever growing “I want” list, the latest is the “Mr. Marc” watch by Marc Jacobs. The watch features one half of the the brands resident illustrated couple, “Mr. Marc” and has an all-black body with tone-on-tone lettering around the dial and a white face. Pretty awesome if you ask me..

The title of this post may be a bit deceiving, seeing as we have no way of confirming that this is in fact the most expensive skate deck ever but hey a skate deck worth R17k is pretty much the most expensive we’ve seen to date. The deck shown above was created by Greg Hervieux, the founder of BKRW and BLACKRAINBOW who has become synonymous with designing original skate decks that are good for pretty much anything but skating. He previously teamed up with Domeau & Pérès to design this leather covered skate deck and now he’s gone and done it in gold.

To create the decks he enlisted the help of some of the finest craftsman at French luxury house l’Atelier Antoine PALOMARES who covered the decks in the finest 22-carat gold leaf. Each deck is priced at a cool €1490,00 (approximately $2,145 USD) and can be ordered exclusively through info@bkrw.com. Don’t expect to be able to actually use the thing seeing as it comes in a plexiglass box to prevent oxidation and damage, clearly it’s a collectors piece designed for anyone but your average skater….
