Rhino poaching has become a serious problem and there have been serious efforts to raise awareness of the problem. A Port Elizabeth based street artist by the name of Faktor decided to use his trade as a away to raise some awareness of the growing problem and the piece is pretty awesome! The piece was pasted up in Stanley Street, Port Elizabeth.

I’m down for anything that would help stop these pathetic excuses for human beings killing our Rhino and even if this post helps bring it to a few peoples attention I’ll be happy. There are loads of ways you can help! One of them I’ve been backing is the Saving Private Rhino initiative.

I managed to watch a bit of this amazing documentary this morning and I certainty plan on finishing it later today. It’s an amazing look into a firs- of-its-kind public art mural project that took place in Rochester, NY in July 2011. The great thing about it, is the project featured four leading artists from Cape Town (Faith47, Freddy Sam, Mak1one, Dal). It’s brilliantly shot and is definitely worth a watch.

‘A short documentary which chronicles a first-of-its-kind public art mural project which took place in Rochester, NY in July 2011. The project involved local artists and a group of four artists from Cape Town (Faith47, Freddy Sam, Mak1one, Dal), SA who shared their talents. Several murals were painted in hopes of inspiring the Rochester community. This privately funded project was sponsored by the Synthesis Collaborative, a Rochester-based nonprofit, and has been provided for online viewing by Ian Wilson, co-founder of The Synthesis Collaborative and producer of the documentary.’

This is a pretty amazing use of a not so common art medium, English designer Vinti Andrews, has constructed a new series of custom dogs made out of classic Nike sneakers. Hypebeast seems to think the shoes used were Air Force 180′s, Air Max 1′s and Dunk Lo’s. The Dogs also feature traditional canine attire such as a spiked necklace and a heavy duty walking chain.

KAWS is without a doubt one of my favourite artists at the moment. His work spans over a decade and when it comes to pop art, he’s without a doubt one of the largest players in the game. His work graces the covers of magazines, music albums and just about anything you can think of and he’s generated and almost cult like following in the art world.

Ronnie K. Pirovino, a major KAWS collector, is the only collector who has all of KAWS’s creations. He’s been carefully collecting pieces by the artist for several years and his collection even boasts few pieces that have never been seen by the public. His ultimate goal is is to show the entire collection in a museum-style show.

Conceptual artists Julia Kim Smith has released a new series of photographs and this time she appears to have got street artists heavyweight Banksy in on the action. There’s no hiding the fact that I’m a massive Banksy fan, 90% of the Banksy related posts on Dont Party were posted by me. So even though there appears to be a sort of stigma attached to posting about him these days, I found this quite interesting and thought I’d share it.

The series of photographs features the modern hooded spectre that has become synonymous with Banksy, as Smith explores what it would be like to unexpectedly receive the British icon as a house-guest. Banksy is seen lounging in the living room, helping with chores, enjoying a bowl of cereal and later a bucket of beers. The aim of the series was to allow us to imagine the artist in situations we’d never generally picture him in. There are also quite a few unexpected presences in the series such as the Smorkin Rabbit by Kozik, a jar of Marmite, Charlie Brown, Juxtapoz magazine and a few others, all were undoubtedly placed for some or other reason, most likely yet to be deciphered.

Space Invader remains one of my favorite ‘Street Artists,’ his style is instantly recognizable and it’s been mimicked and copied by many. His works have been seen around the world although at times it’s unclear whether the pieces are actually his or the work of a copycat, for instance the piece in Gardens Cape Town.

In celebration of his 1000th mosaic to be placed in the city of Paris, La Générale has organized an exhibition highlighting a wide range of Space Invader’s works including photographs, stickers, installations and even a Speed Ball machine. This is just plain awesome, although I do think the final image could have been a little more thought out but the concept is just plain awesome! For the promotion of its energy drink, “V Energy” created a giant paintball machine with more than 840 guns, which are arranged to create a chosen image. Watch the video to see it in action!

Death Cab for Cutie have released a new music video for their single, “Home is a Fire” off the band’s album Codes and Keys, available May 31. The concept for the music video was conceptualized by street artist Shepard Fairey and Death Cab for Cutie bassist Nicholas Harmer. Enjoy!

Shepard Fairey

I have been a fan of Death Cab for years so I was excited to hear from bassist Nick Harmer about his idea to collaborate on a video piece for their song Home Is A Fire.

I love the democracy of music and I’m always excited to bundle visual art with great music. Nick sent me the lyrics to Home Is A Fire and they evoked the duality of “home” both as a place you inhabit, and also as a place that inhabits or traps you. One’s relationship with home might be complicated, but ultimately it can be a two-way dialogue, of which we can at least affect one-way.

One of my favourite “street artists” Shepard Fairey recently visited the Windy City as part of the Art Chicago Fair, where he pasted up twelve large posters under a highway overpass. The prints feature some amazing detail and may be familiar as they were released last week as large format prints available here. Enjoy!
