KAWS is without a doubt one of my favourite artists at the moment. His work spans over a decade and when it comes to pop art, he’s without a doubt one of the largest players in the game. His work graces the covers of magazines, music albums and just about anything you can think of and he’s generated and almost cult like following in the art world.

Ronnie K. Pirovino, a major KAWS collector, is the only collector who has all of KAWS’s creations. He’s been carefully collecting pieces by the artist for several years and his collection even boasts few pieces that have never been seen by the public. His ultimate goal is is to show the entire collection in a museum-style show.

Swatch has teamed up with Kidrobot, to create Kidrobot for Swatch, a collection of eight watches, each accompanied by a complimentary Dunny. The range features some amazing artists such as Gary Baseman, Jeremyville, Frank Kozik, Joe Ledbetter, MAD, Tara McPherson, SSUR, and Tilt. The range looks amazing and will be released soon, whether it hits South African shores is another question entirely, let’s hope it does. Check it out below.

South African designer Kronk, who has been featured on the pages of Dont Party numerous times has unveiled an awesome new Dunny design for Kidrobot. This time around it’s a limited edition 20-inch Killjoy Dunny that will be hitting stores on June 30th with a price tag of $400. I’ll certainly be keeping an eye for it!

Executing another exhibition style piece in vinyl, coarse brings their latest figure assemblage, “casting shadows” to light. It includes an original sculpt of definitive coarse character, noop, huddled in sorrow, and his new shellbound pet, nism, to illustrate the narrative of this contrasted set. The noop clings to a fabric kite reminiscent of long time friend, paw!, which soars above, casting his shadow onto the two characters. This lyrical piece allows you to set up the noop and nism in a situation of your own making.

Slide open the heavy hand crafted cardboard box by pulling at the woven ‘noop’ and ‘nism’ tags. Uncover the box contents — two vinyl figures, the longing nism [4''] and huddled noop [7'']. Set up the fabric paw! kite, and let the noop hold the string tight in his hand. The paw! kite will float high in the sky [14''], casting his shadow onto the two torn friends. A set of c-o-a-r-s-e typographic leaves complete this scenery, full of desperation.

Ashley Wood, the Tasmanian evil, drops his latest offering with ThreeA toys [Hong Kong] and they will knock the sin outta you. The new set of Fighting JC figurines brings Jesus back to life in vinyl form, more angry than ever and ready to kick some serious zombie butt. The set features 4 different versions of the messiah in all his tattooed, bloody fisted, hipster bearded glory, complete with Adidas sneaks and a zombie head in the sack [swooon]. KAWS, the New York based ex-graff artist – come vinyl toy God, unleashes the madness on Hong Kong today with his most extensive display to date. The exhibition entitled ‘Passing Through’ includes a colossal 5 metre high version of his classic Companion piece, as well as a full display of his prior works and some exclusive drawings for the show.

The massive Companion was revealed last week, and the full show opens today [3/10/10] at Harbour City, in Kowloon, Hong Kong. Brian Donnelly aka KAWS will be attending the event and doing a book signing.

This follows the release of KAWS’ remakes of classic Disney characters Pinocchio and Tweety, adding the signature KAWS X eyes and skull&crossbones, that have become so synonymous with the artist who is widely considered to be the world leader in vinyl toys.

He closes his eyes and blackness surrounds him.
The noop is all alone. Cast into a harsh wasteland, eroded by a burning struggle. The once perfect ecosystem has been penetrated. A gash remains; a vast bowl of entangled colours and decaying matter. Towers of waste eclipse the hazy twilight glow. Pools of rainbow poisons churn deep below the surface. No life can exist in this forsaken place, hidden away in the desert…hidden, so that they would never find it.

Remaining Mass. A forgotten energy occupies the mountains. Abandoned exoskeletons, jagged spines and wrecked machines rest uneasy. A thousand souls are dumped into the monstrous crater. The invisible watcher endures the pain of another triumphant harvest. If only he could have warned his generation about this evil that they had kept so close to them.

Awakening of Spring. With a spasm, and a surge of bubbles, the embryo thumps the wall of its protective cell, submerged in dense fruity goo. Its pulse sends tiny shockwaves into the surrounding fluid. Cosily caught in a pocket of time, untouchable, oblivious to the destiny that awaits it.

Casting Shadows. Colours flutter, and the air is sweet and crisp. He watches over Gum City as a gentle breeze licks his face. His paw! blimp floats high above him. It reminds him of the lighter days they used to have together, but now a colossal shadow is beginning to hang over all of them. It is fall.

Friends in Pain. His eyes frantically search for a fragment of light. He has lost all sense of direction, a helpless particle falling through a strange dimension. In the same instant, his delicate body is huddled on a hungry beach. Colourless sky, skin and sand drown into the background. Blood streams out of his mouth, forming a muddy puddle below him. Cruel nature has torn two friends apart forever.

Glimpse of Truth. The noop finds himself trapped in a dark and musty room. He looks down over a familiar life force, as it lies restlessly on a mattress. Its misery occupies every inch of the space. Every breath it takes reveals the trauma faced by its defenceless cells. The bandages covering its eyes don’t stop the visions from coming. It sits up with a jolt and faces the noop. “Only you can stop this. Break the cycle and end the suffering forever.”

The set contains the cloaked noop and a pitch-black paw! staring into nothingness. The distant duo is lost in black sponge. Hidden in a premium black box, stamped with gold and black foil – handcrafted to perfection. The package is completed with 3 original coarse poster prints and sealed by a transparent sleeve with the signature paw! nose.

The story behind this rare art toy is as follows:

The noops were conceived in the warm elastomer spring, lost from the beginning. They grew strong in the summer, and then switched to a life of decline, a life that drew towards a painful end, slowly passing into nothing but blackness. This supreme and highly limited figure set marks the beginning and the end of the recurring noop life cycle, closing of the final chapter of the era of jaws. [extract from www.coarselife.com]

Their jaws line is the brand’s longest running and most famous series, yet loser, the final edition brings a real different flavour to party. As a follow up to their jaws pain and false friends release, this strange new duo brings a light and playful edge to the often gloomy world of coarse.

The figure comes in two highly limited versions, includes a 13″ noop figure and his jaws shark visor, embedded in sponge and packaged in a deluxe paper box. Both versions are also available in a miniature keychain, with movable shark head.
