Well now this is pretty cool. Mark Zuckerberg has just been named Time’s Person of the Year for 2010. Not too bad for a 26-year-old T-shirt-wearing dude with an aversion to authority. Plus, he managed to wedge out Wikileaks’s Julian Assange (couldn’t really use him with that whole rape controversy, could they?) and the Chilean miners.

Time say he has pretty much created his own empire, and that he is at the centre of the great transitions we are facing in society today. Great timing, considering that Facebook is super close to the 600 million user mark, making it the “connective tissue for a tenth of the planet”. Almost a billion bits of content are loaded up onto Facebook daily.

Says Richard Stengel:

“For connecting more than half a billion people and mapping the social relations among them (something that has never been done before); for creating a new system of exchanging information that has become both indispensable and sometimes a little scary; and finally, for changing how we all live our lives in ways that are innovative and even optimistic, Mark Elliot Zuckerberg is TIME’s 2010 Person of the Year.”

world web heavy-hitter Google has just introduced html5 coding into it’s cellar of amazing things that it’s doing.

Along with their adaption of the format to allow you drag and drop things from your desktop into, for instance, a Gmail message, the Google kids have made a fun little revision to their logo (click) on their UK search engine homepage.

WHAT IS HTML5

HTML5 is currently under development as the next major revision of the HTML standard. Like its immediate predecessors, HTML 4.01 and XHTML 1.1, HTML5 is a standard for structuring and presenting content on the World Wide Web. The new standard incorporates features like video playback and drag-and-drop that have been previously dependent on third-party browser plug-ins such as Adobe Flash, Microsoft Silverlight, and Google Gears.

codeorgan.com offers a very unique way of decoding websites…

A company in London called DLKW created codeorgan as a way to use complex binary algorithms to seperate a website into drums, keys and synths…

“We make ideas that get people to do things.  We call this creativity that changes behaviour.” – DLKW

Codeorgan basically analyzes the inputted website’s “body” and removes all the letters that aren’t in our chromatic musical scale, from the left over letters the letter that appears the most determines the key; and whether this letter appears an even or odd time determines if the scale is major or minor. The amount of text then determines which of the 10 synthesizers are used and the ratio of text A-G to the rest of the alphabet determines which drum pattern is used!

It’s a crazy concept, but whether you can get something melodically concrete is purely up to your determination, some sites just sound a mess some sound pretty crazy… you be the judge!

The Sasquatch is alive, and now it can be seen in the comfort of your own home. The Living Sasquatch is a site that uses augmented reality technology, whereby the user can superimpose a seemingly 3d animation of our friend bigfoot into the space wherever you are, provided you have a printer and a webcam. You can then intercact with him, get him to perform a range of grunts, and primate behaviour and record a video of the shenanigans. It’s a cheap laugh. Check it out here.

There is nothing worse than websites that undermine the potential of the internet, the ones that basically just serve the same purpose as any other lame piece of marketing material, providing the user with contact details, about us, blah blah, who gives a fuck?

Regardless of the fact that there are awesome and groundbreaking technologies out there, sometimes you just wanna see some arbitrary, unaffected, interactive fun on the web, and that’s what Dutch designer Rafael Rozendaal brings to the party. His super 8bit, programmer style websites serve absolutely no function, and how awesome given the corporate nature of most web content today? They are very basic, playful and  interactive designs that cater to your A.D.D. appetite. The novelty will wear off quickly, and some may be a little visually overwhelming at first (epilepsy peeps beware), but check it out to teleport yourself into a world where MS Dos meets winamp visualisations in bitmap neon.
