WHO IS MAC LETHAL?

Mac Lethal signed to Minneapolis-based Rhymesayers Entertainment in 2004. His Rhymesayers debut album, “11:11″was released on October 9, 2007. After heading out on tour with Atmosphere in the fall of 2007, he embarked on a tour in support of the album in early and mid 2008 with fellow Black Clover Records artist Grieves. His song “Sun Storm” from 11:11 was played on Randy Jackson Presents: America’s Best Dance Crew during the elimination videos of Live in Color, Fysh n’ Chicks, BreakSk8 and Kaba Modern. “Sun Storm” is currently Mac’s most downloaded song on Itunes, even though ‘Lookin’ Bro’ is Mac Lethal’s most famous song of all time with over 2,000,000 YouTube views.

A few of us here at Dont Party come from design and branding backgrounds, and when I stumbled across this gem, well, it gave me an ear to ear guilty grin. The Anti Design Festival, taking place in London later this month is a backlash against the established London Design Festival which takes place over the same period. The Anti Design Festival, opening for the first time this year, is headed by UK graphic design and typography nonconformist, Neville Brody, founder of Research Studios [UK]. Anyone who has picked up a decent design book in the last 10 years will have seen his works. Some of us may even have been lucky enough to see him present at Design Indaba over the past few years, where he has been a guest four times. Brody describes the festival as follows: ‘As a response to 25 years of cultural deep freeze, the Anti Design Festival will attempt to unlock creative fires and ideas, exploring spaces hitherto deemed out-of-bounds by a purely commercial criteria.’ If this sparks any hint of creative rebelliousness in you, do yourself a favour and go read the full ADF manifesto here.

Those of you who are designers or who have dabbled in the craft will know that it can be an extremely strenuous, underpaid and under appreciated line of work. In fact, most designers I know, even the best ones have moved on to second rate desk jobs, or even worse, are forced into big corporate design houses where they churn out killyourself corporate design, day in and day out. So much for creating an identity for this developing culture, that we as young creatives are so vital to.  This is where Anti Design Festival comes in, it’s oxygen is design that serves no purpose other than the aesthetic. Brody said the following about the call for entries (which is unfortunately already over):. ‘This is the chance to show previous work that has failed with clients or instructors, or to produce completely new work without the imposition of market restrictions. Because this festival is completely nonprofit in orientation, we cannot pay for contributions. However, this is an opportunity for your work to engage a wide audience in a context that will challenge and provoke the public to rethink the role of art and design in contemporary culture.’

At multiple venues around Redchurch Street in London’s Shoreditch area, the festival will incorporate exhibitions, installations, workshops, performances and talks in Art, Design, Product, Film, Sound, Fashion, Performance, Print and Interactive.

Now this is a festival that I could really get into. When I saw this on Bangers and Nash [Vote For them they're awesome - But don't forget about us ] I got pretty excited.

See where I went to school there was a small little brewery called Nottingham Road Brewery, and I got very hammered a lot of the time on their specialty beers. So I have a lot of respect for the small independent guys [Much like ourselves - small and trying to get by]

Now Brewers & Union and Jack Black Beer are throwing this little shindig on Thursday the 23 of September [the day before Heritage Day] it’s going to be hosted at the Neighbourgoods Market in Woodstock. Now if any of you used to go to the beer fest in JHB then you know how fun a day of drinking good beer can be.

Whats really cool about this is it’s all going to be small independent breweries so expect some outstanding and highly original beers. Yes!

Midnight, Saturday night. Rum and coke flow from the corners of the dusty Pretoria backyard. Hundreds of indie rockers, hipsters and party seekers have crammed into the now renowned Hotbox studios for the most epic house party to hit the student suburb of Arcadia. A swarm of eager revelers have been turned away from the gate, with over 850 people having sardined into the property. The kids have travelled from the farthest corners of the province, from Bronkhorstpruit to Benoni, to witness this even. And they are getting rowdy.

It’s the Havana Club Rum, Dogbox & Discotheque party.

When I traipse into the Dogbox party at Hotbox studios a little earlier on in the night, the bright neon lights and flowing rum have morphed the dance floor into a mosh pit – the type you get when the music and euphoria of the masses erupt into sheer nihilism. Broken and battered, the great unwashed have surrendered to the seductive powers of Double Adapter and their brand of ‘sexostyle death glitch’. With stalwart flashy visuals and catchy beats, they entice the swarming mob into glorious abandon.

A short rendezvous with the barman and his liberal helpings of Rum lead to butch bromance between the most manly of men under the omniscient Gauteng sky.

A couple of elbowed eyes, much trampled pride and a few jagers later, and Le Castle Vania has brought his Atlanta-born distorted and dirty beats to the soils of Pretoria. His electro-dance blends of anything from the Eurythmics to the Smashing Pumpkins and Daft Punk mushroom the energy of the legions into ecstatic bliss. His head bobs behind the decks as he spews out a grinding disco-punk merging of pop and electronica.  These kids are not used to the likings of rigorous wedding DJesque mixing, but Le Castle Vania pulls it off, leaving their hands in the air, behinds on the floor and heads in the clouds.

By 1am, most have lost the ability to speak in full sentences. The freedom of the houseparty-cum-electro fests that Dogbox parties have come to be known for, has led to chaotic disregard for societal confines. It’s recklessness that you can’t bottle, label or avoid, and will soon find yourself falling for. Organised chaos. Or just plain chaos. It makes the occasional power trip tolerable.  (No generator could harness the paramount energy of these acts).

When Haezer mounts the stage, a lavish structure set up on the doorstep of the living room, a few straddle the amps in a bid to get closer.

Everyone tries to get a piece of this shy Capetonian garden boy, surely aware our rickety borders will not withstand his effervescent powers for much longer. When he braves the front of the stage, hands grab at him from every direction, groping and tugging at his clothes and arms and face. Like Dante emerging from the depths, being called back to the underworld.

Sassquatch finally comes out of the shadows with his keytar-like controllers, ravishing the screens with killer imagery. A perfect match with Haezer’s hammering hard-hitting bass. The brainwashing colours and sounds continue.

Shortly after Haezer’s show, rumours of noise complaints have the music dying in a sultry anticlimax.  (Noise complaints in a student capital on a Saturday night!?)

Still, the night rolls on and kids keep buying drinks and singing to their own tunes.

But the evening grinds to an abrupt halt, when instead of taking on Peter Rocka on the decks in the dying hours of the night, Dr.Khumalo is running amock telling people to drop their drinks and run in the name of liberty. A dozen cops have crashed into the party, big guns and bigger egos at the ready. My stunned curiosity has me standing there, bewildered. “But why?”  I ask. Barks of “party”, “licence”, “2am”, and “illegal” float through the rapidly exiting crowd. The army of devotees are finally convinced, and pile onto the streets, trapped in disoriented bathos.

A friend’s disappointment overcomes him, and he pleads with a large bear of a policemen standing guard at the gate to allow the party to continue. “It’s not fair,” he moans, unconvinced that this is the end.

“I understand my boy. You were just making party. Now move along and make party elsewhere.” The friend was not having this. He begs the man, stopping short of dragging the policeman back into the party with him.

It takes an army of people to drag him away, bundle him into a car, and drive him off into safety.

As I fall asleep on a hard floor in a friend’s house two blocks away, images of frolicking in between the laser-stained trees have me forgetting the disappointment of an early end, leaving me somewhat content. Only slightly, until the next one.

BASEMENT JAXX

Since starting life as underground producers and party  promoters in 1995, putting out their first tracks on shrink wrapped vinyl and  throwing hush-hush raves in abandoned South London pizza joints, Simon Ratcliffe and Felix Buxton, collectively known as Basement Jaxx, have taken the  sound of London, SW9 to the world.

With album sales of more than 3 million under their belt,  including 2005’s double platinum UK No.1 collection “The Singles”, Basement  Jaxx have also developed into a remarkable live act and developed into an all out sensory assault featuring drums, percussion, guitar and an army of  singers.

2005 saw them play at the world famous Hollywood Bowl in Los  Angeles, to 30,000 people in Hyde Park in Central London and close the main  stage at the ultimate festival, Glastonbury.

The hour of EARTHDANCE 2010 draws nigh! And damn can I say that excitement is bubbling all around town for this one! Festival season is back and after a few months hiatus the period where we spend our weekends in front of massive rigs and incredible music kick off with a BANG!

We are privileged to have been given 2 WEEKEND PASSES by the Earthdance team to giveaway to YOU, our loyal readers!

A Brief History Of Earthdance

A Global Collaboration Since 1997.

Earthdance is the world’s largest synchronized music and dance festival for peace. Since its inception, Earthdance has been held annually in over 500 locations in 80 countries with all events simultaneously joining together in the Prayer for Peace – a powerful moment of coherent intention. Each public Earthdance event commits 50% of its profits to a charity that falls into one of the following categories:

• The Welfare of Children and Urban Youth
• Indigenous Peoples and Cultures
• International Relief and Development
• Environmental Sustainability and Protection
• Organizations that Promote Peace

Seeing as Earthdance is an initiative that is about giving back we decided to feature the charities that the event donates a massive amount of it’s turnover for the betterment of those less fortunate than us.

1. The Shine Centre

The Shine Centre is a volunteer driven NGO. Our programme provides support in literacy and language enrichment to second language learners in the Foundation Phase (Grade R-Grade 3). They promote tirisano- a term for encouraging learners, parents, communities and businesses to work in partnership with us towards securing a better education for our children in South Africa.

Their aim is to support young children from historically and economically disadvantaged communities in language enrichment and reading.

2. The Earthchild Project

The Earthchild Project is a non profit organisation working in schools in the Western Cape.

They’re working within the existing structure of schools, teaching kids the things that they wish they’d learnt. The Earthchild project are creating a new generation of confident, conscious and responsible young leaders. Children, teachers and parents all benefit from the Earthchild Project and within the first year our impact is tangible and visible.

Their facilitators are young, dynamic, experienced and inspirational human beings and are placed in a school where their role is to introduce and maintain our holistic and experiential education programme. Their full time position ensures that the project’s impact will be meaningful and sustainable.

After only one year these schools have beautiful organic vegetable gardens, they are recycling, their tuckshops sell healthy food, and yoga, meditation and life skills lessons are part of the school routine – just to mention some of our exciting projects and the many new skills our children, teachers and parents are learning.

1 facilitator is all it will take to uplift and transform the lives of over 1000 children!

The festival kicks off tomorrow and my sweet God, I wish I was in the UK right now because the Reading festival is going to be awesome! The Line Up is one of the best in a long time with the likes of  GnR, Arcade Fire, QOTSA, Paramore, Gaslight Anthem, Lost Prophets, Biffy Clyro, Pendulum and Alkaline Trio performing to name a few! Yes, It’s gonna be big and I must say the organizers aren’t taking any shit this year! Firstly they are not selling tickets at the door and they have stated that If you are caught inside or even anywhere around the premises they will have you prosecuted! Secondly they have told Guns n Roses that If they are late for their gig they are not going to let them perform. Ok, I have mixed feelings about this, firstly yeah sure.. GnR are arrogant, selfish pricks who don’t give a shit about performing, let alone their fans, all they are, are a bunch old fucks who are broke from spending all their money on drugs and hookers (lucky bastards) and have to perform in order to live.(Sorry that was harsh but you know its true! They still rock hard though I have to admit)… But Remember Coke fest 2007? Dicks…

However…If I paid the hard dollar (or pound sterling) to see GnR perform and the organisers of the event didn’t let them perform coz they were late..Well then I’d be pretty pissed off!! And do the organizers really want another riot? But you know what, fuck it, If they don’t show up there are still a shit load of bands worthy of the entrance..That been said, who wouldn’t want to be part of the world’s greatest music festival, I’d go there just for the vibe!

The Leeds and Reading festival take place over the same weekend. The line ups are the same they change the days. For example, Arcade Fire are playing in Reading on the Friday and in Leeds on Sunday. Check the different stages below..Reading is at the top and Leeds at the bottom.

Tickets are 180 pounds, including camping, so If you anywhere in Europe get your ass there!
