Just when you think they’re done for, Cape Town based “zef-rapper” group Die Antwoord pull one out of the hat and take over the interwebs once again. The group had to cancel a gig at Jozifest this weekend so they could perform on the United States television talk show, the Late Show with David Letterman.

The following statement is an official response from Soundscape Productions in response to the criticism, comments and experiences At Summer Music Festival which took place the past weekend (4th and 5th of Feb 2012)

Firstly, Soundscape would like to formally apologise to everyone who felt let down by the organization of the event. The purpose of this statement is to be as transparent as possible.

VENUE:
The original venue was D’Aria Wine Estate, the parking was inadequate and we moved the venue with more space to accommodate more festival goers.

SEARCHING OF CARS:
In order to obtain the event license searching of vehicles for alcohol & weapons was a pre-requisite, we apologise for not been able to speed up the process.

PARKING:
Because of the large number of VIP tickets sold the allocated VIP parking was increased to accommodate that, therefore the parking area available was VIP.

VISUALS, SOUND & LIGHTING
There were minor issues pertaining to the the LED visuals, we will however in future use more high tech visuals

CLOSURE OF BARS @ 2AM
The liquor license granted allowed us to trade till 2am (Due to that we were forced to shut down all liquor sales at 2am)

NON PERFORMANCE OF ADVERTISED DJ’s
We’ve noticed a few people stating that Dean Fuel, Pascal & Pearce as well as Niskerone was not at the event – They were definitely there and all had a rocking set, pics are available as proof.

CLOSURE OF THE ELECTRO & DUBSTEP FLOORS
Captain Roussouw from the Philadelphia Police Station received in excess of 10 calls that evening pertaining to noise pollution (although we were issued with a noise exemption certificate) he’s duty was to still respond and salvage any noise complaints from the surrounding areas. His recommendation was to close the Electro Floor & VIP floor at 4am to lower the noise complaints, failing us doing that he would be forced to shut the entire event down.

PROFITEERING OUT OF THIS EVENT:
Soundscape is a commercial enterprise and we do exist to run a profit, as are all the various companies & platforms you have used to read about the event

VIP VILLAGE:
We’ve also noticed that various people mentioned that the VIP Village was nonexistent? This is completely untrue, the VIP village came equipped with;

1 * 100 square metre Bedouin Tent

Toilet Facilities
We had 55 toilets which was more than the legal requirements from the city of Cape Town. More attention could have been paid to the upkeep and maintenance thereof.

Fresh Drinking Water:
It is very much illegal in terms of health & safety for any public venue/premises to not provide drinking water, Despite the fact that the Ostrich Farm has been going through an intense drought the venue owner ensured that sufficient drinking water has been available for everyone at the side of the main bar.

Below are repeated questions raised about the event on various media platforms and our responses accordingly
1) No VIP parking/Area

2) Overpriced Bars (not 150m as advertised)
Prices were were more in line with most clubs and venues

3) No free drinking water (this is illegal) Water tanks were available at the end of the main bar, however were not available at some of the other bars

4) No cleaners and not enough bins (Event looked like a rubbish dump) The event had 65 bins, but we agree that they were not used correctly.

5) Poor sound quality . Main stage –
Sound was quality was adequate

6) False advertising – no paintballing/no shade/no swimming!
There was shade as provided by in excess of 20 tents. Paintballing was cancelled on the day because of the extreme heat, it was decided that no one would use the protective uniform. (Helmet, gloves, boiler suit, goggles!)

7) The sound company was only paid to run until 8am!! All DJs after this were cancelled.
This is not true. As the sound was turned off at 10 am. However we did have a generator issue in the early hours of Sunday morning.

6). Visuals were faulty – trying to run milkdrop/gforce off winamp
We don’t know what this means, but it will most definitely be addressed at the next event buill will advise our technical department to ensure that it’s resolved at the next event

9) DJ running late- We were not aware of this. Paul van Dyk played on time and for over 3hrs.

10) Not enough toilets – DIRTY AND OVERFLOWING.
We had 55 toilets which was more than the legal requirements from the city of Cape Town. Agreed, that more attention could have been paid to them.

11) Not allowing alcohol onto the premises to increase bar profits (Then lying about it and claiming that it is due to licensing restrictions)
SAPS conditions prevented alcohol to be taken on to the site for this event.

12) No free swimming dams! (you had to pay every time you wanted to get into the water – R20)
The dam was free, however the amusement ball was available as one of the attractions for R20 separate to the dam area and to the event

As our best efforts are been made to address all concerns and queries everyone needs to know that this event plan had to meet all city requirements & bi-laws in order to proceed with the event, the City Of Cape Town ensures that event organisers follow legal requirements in order to host events. We are aware that there are a number of dissatisfied patrons however the positive is that majority had a great time, all issues is what we’ll need to work towards with the next festival.

So on Sunday I attended a braai with some buddies and the talk of the day was the apparent debacle that was Paul van Dyk. I decided to go online and see what other people were saying about the event and it seems the feeling is almost universal, the event was a shambles!

So what happened?

*I need to clarify here that I never attended this event, the comments below are the opinions shared by many and have been copied and pasted off the numerous pages associated with this event.

“about 3/4 of the people were VIP who were promised so much. There was no point to the VIP as it was so far from the main arena and it shut down during the night…No point in paying more for the ticket”

Sound

“The sound was mediocre just before PVD came on and then we had to hear some dude saying “Check, check, YEAH!!!” for 5 minutes.”

Alcohol Sales

“We were promised 150m bars, I saw 1 bar and it was like 20m IF THAT!!! Bar ran out of everything before PVD even finished playing, if you didn’t want us to bring alcohol to the party MAKE sure you have enough – so much for there being PLENTY alcohol available..”

Confiscating Alcohol

.they confiscated my alcohol and then close the bar, where is the sense in that? What a dodgy production!

Closed Early

“PVD was pretty good but considering its advertised as a 2 day festival, and they cut the music off at 10am Sunday, can i get half my money back?, Gatecrasher/Soundscape what an absolute joke, will never attend another another one of their events again…”

So what now?

It’s pretty clear that the event was a complete disaster, Citymob are now offering refunds for the event and many DJs and attendees are calling for a boycott of all future Soundscape events. All I can say is I’m extremely releived we never pushed this event in anyway as it has become clearly evident that there were a whole lot of problems with this event.
