on the plane as i flew up above the mountain ranges i felt to float down to the hills, drenched in sun and to be surrounded by open unending space…

i felt myself letting go of attachments.. of becoming a leaf in the wind..

the boy i sat next to was about 14.. he was going with his brother and his mom to do some shopping in hong kong.  black diamonds in the sky…

this world is strange and beautiful. hong kong has the tallest blocks of flats right on the river..  little ant villages for people ants..

and then in china even more people ants… so many many many many people…

the village i was in used to have 30 000 people in it 30 years ago – a fishing village, now it has 16 million.

the section we were in is famous as an art district.. but that means that its a mass producing reproduction center…
not quite a sweatshop vibe , but thats how china works, everything is about mass production..
there is apparently a printmaking district, a jeans district.. whatever your looking for there is a district for it..

the area we were in was pretty dirty, they kill chickens right in front of you in the street so that you can see your meat is fresh.. lots of rubbish in the streets…

when going into the city its much cleaner but still a sense of organized chaos rules…

people stare at me like im some kind of alien and the men think i am quite exotic,  the women here are quite extraordinarily beautiful..

one guy started following me around taking photos of me in the shop i had to laugh…

and theres no facebook or twitter and limited sites you can access online as well as restrictions on speech, and media.

one needs to keep within the parameters of government and then everyones happy…

china is a capitalist totalitarian state, no communism to be found…

but really i felt there was a certain sense of freedom there.. somehow…

even though in our project there were censorship issues and the government censorship board had to come around to check all the artworks.

it is under control but i could still sense a kind of freedom which i cant quite explain…

there is such a new energy there.

the younger guys i met were super cool.. really at the edge of sharpness.

its kind of contradictory because the reverse is true also…
but i guess one week can only leave impressions… god i cant understand south africa and ive lived there my whole life….

but china is on the brink of something huge… its changing fast and with unstoppable force..

IMG 0981 Faith47 Diaries :: Chapter 1 :: China

incredible wealth. you can feel the economy is bursting…

IMG 1009 Faith47 Diaries :: Chapter 1 :: China
everything is about consumerism…

IMG 0958 Faith47 Diaries :: Chapter 1 :: China

but despite this there are still strong ghosts of china past walking the streets…
it was not possible for mao to distinguish 5000 years of culture and spirituality.
some of the people i met confirmed this for me with their stories and insights into their thinking and dreams…

its so complex and so very foreign…
im pretty astounded at the enormity of the world..

the whole trip was a whirlwind…. a crazy electrical storm
my heart pierced and swimming in the blood red power that that country holds
and all i could think when leaving and driving through hong kong was
that i want to see more.. i want to understand more…

that side of the world is booming…
there is something there happening that make europe and america seem faded on paper.

the project was grand.. great artists, great people, art, stifling heat, music, censorship, ballroom dancing, chicken pox[not me luckily], lots of food. fancy hotels, petitions, lots of rice, lots of fun…

losing village finding city low res Faith47 Diaries :: Chapter 1 :: China

the theme for the mural project was

finding city, painting village

ive titled the work  ’losing village, finding city

30 years ago shenzen city was a small fishing village with 30 000 people living in it …
today there are about 16 million people living there…

this stark push from the village and pull to the cities is intensified in china but is a universal phenomenon…
the waterbuffalo, or the cow, is a powerful image as it holds allot of significance in different cultures…  symbolizing rural life, wealth, status, holiness…

the man who is leadng this waterbuffalo is on his cellphone, feeling very important and in control…
yet he is so small in comparison to the magnificence and emotional weight of the animal…

a reminder that we little humans have only to look behind us to acknowledge the real power and wealth of nature, the villages, the earth…

and start to look after these things…

progress is good, the growth of cities is not a bad thing, it is a natural progression…
but we need to be conscious of our effects and of what is being destroyed in order to create…
